It is Easy to Prevent Tooth Decay in Children

Most of the tooth decay cases in the country are all preventable, says Dr. Sheryl Radin, a dentist with over 25 years of experience. In fact, even with early signs of decay, many cases can still be caught and treated to stop the problem from getting worse.

What are the causes of tooth decay and how can tooth decay be prevented?

Basically, tooth decay develops when acid-producing bacteria in the mouth do the job they are tasked to do. The bacteria helps digest the natural or artificial sugars in food and drinks ingested by children. The problem starts when the acids generated by these bacteria are not rinsed off. Yes, just like other kinds of acids, the acids in the mouth will eat away the enamel of the teeth, setting in motion the decaying process. Thus, parents have to make sure that their kids drink water or rinse their mouths after drinking juice, milk, soft drink and sugar-enhanced drinks.

Water is indeed important in preventing tooth decay. Hence, drinking a lot of water is helpful as it aids in the production of saliva. Saliva helps wash away the sugars left on children’s teeth. Moreover, water that has been added with fluoride is even better in preventing the production of more acids. In fact, fluoride is known to reduce tooth decay in children by as much as 60%. This was found out through national studies done to find out whether fluoride is indeed effective in addressing tooth decay problems.

However, there are people who are quick to point out the dangers of fluoride on certain aspects of people’s health. But then, backed by more than 60 years of research and experience, a certain level of fluoride in water has been considered safe for deployment in most US municipal water systems.

There are also many pediatric dentists in Trenton who encourage parents to give their kids calcium-enriched food and beverages. In most cases, dentists see weakened tooth structure as the cause of tooth decay when they are in the process of fixing a broken tooth. Calcium is vital for strong bones and teeth. Kids dentists in Ewing NJ also suggest that parents control their kids’ intake of sweets.

Now if fluoridated water is not available in your place, you can look for a dentist who provides dentistry for kids which includes fluoride sealants. The dental sealants also give protection against tooth decay and the formation of cavities.

Lastly, parents should take their children for their first dental visit as early as in the 8th month from birth or as soon as a few teeth have appeared. The first visit to a dentist for kids in Levittown gives parents the chance to understand the importance of good oral hygiene. This is why Dr. Sheryl Radin, a professor at the Kornberg School of Dentistry, also encourages parents to teach their kids proper oral hygiene.
