Bulging Discs and Pain

Posted by SEObucks  |  No comments

There are cases when a bulging disc causes a person pain. The bulging disc is the result when the cartilage found between two spinal bones bulges out. Usually, this problem is seen in people who lift heavy objects or those who pick up heavy things without bending their knees. In other instances, a bulging disc is caused by an accident that hurt the spinal column.

Bulging discs bring a lot of pain, specifically back pain, because the dislocated cartilage puts stress on the nerve endings in the area. The first aid for a person with a bulging disc is to reduce the pain so that the person can still move and do regular chores.

So, what should be done with a bulging disc?

Lessen the inflammation

A bulging disc is made worse with movement. Therefore, it is important to rest in between physical activities. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent the injury from getting worse. What this means is that you have to concentrate on pain and swelling reduction in the first 48 hours of feeling the pain. You can apply ice to the injured part to constrict the blood vessels, make the swelling go down. As soon as you are able to manage the swelling, you can apply a heating pad or use a hot bath to get blood flowing back to the injured part.

Focus on the symptoms

Back pain due to a bulging disc is really hard to ignore. As such, you can turn to anti-inflammatory medication for help. The usual pain killers are naproxen sodium and ibuprofen. For acute pain, your doctor could even prescribe steroids or cortisone which is more effective for treating intense pain.

There is also an herb called Ilex which is used to minimize pain. Its capability to minimize pain is attributed to certain properties it possesses which relax the muscles around the affected part. But of course, you must first consult your general practitioner before taking any of these medications as they could react with the other medicines you may be taking.

Concentrate on strengthening your muscles

When you feel that the inflammation subsides, you can start doing light exercise. The light physical activity is great for firming up your muscles in the area around the injured part. How is this done? Exercise improves blood flow to the affected part. This improved blood flow is important to promote healing. Additionally, when the muscles, ligaments and tendons on the back are a little bit more flexible, you can benefit from lesser pain than usual. A few exercises for lower back pain in Tampa are walking, stretching, swimming, and low impact aerobics.

These non surgical remedies for middle back pain are useful in soothing the pain you feel due to a bulging disc. However, if you have endured the condition for quite some time now, it is better for you to visit a chronic pain management center that can address your back and joint pain in Tampa. Because lightheadedness is a usual side effect, you can do well with a fall prevention program in Pinellas County to make sure that you do not further harm yourself because of the bulging disc.
